This complete matching set includes the 7 text volumes and atlas volume that recount the travels of the legendary Scythian barbarian, Anacharsis. This important work of French philhellenism includes information on ancient Greek architecture, philosophy, and art. The accompanying atlas volume features 24 maps, 7 plates depicting Greek buildings, and 1 plate depicting ancient medallions. The maps are by Barbie du Bocage and engraved by Guillaume de la Haye.
Volumes I-VII are octavo (5.4 x 8.0"), in full contemporary tree calf, with gilt embellishments and red morocco spine labels, all edges marbled. Atlas volume is quarto (8.5 x 10.3"), in contemporary quarter calf over marbled-paper covered boards, with gilt embellishments and a red morocco spine label, all edges marbled.

The atlas volume is clean and bright with contemporary outline color on some of the maps, minor occasional soiling, and color offsetting on a few maps. The text volumes are clean and bright with occasional minor soiling. Each volume has the bookplate of Alexander Brebner pasted onto the inside front cover. The covers have bumped corners and small abrasions in the leather. The spines are lightly worn with small abrasions.
