This plate accompanied a 43-page article (not present) by William Hamilton entitled "An Account of the Late Eruption of Mount Vesuvius" that was issued in the Philosophical Transactions, of the Royal Society of London. According to the author, the recent eruption was one of the worst on record and the engraving shows the lava paths with dark shading. Three different eruptions over a 2-week period are keyed to the map. The engraving extends to include the various cities and settlements around Vesuvius' base including Naples, Torre del Greco, Boscoreale, and more.
