This handsome plan depicts the city of Candia (present-day Heraklion) on the island of Crete in the early days of the Siege of Candia. From 1648 to 1669, Venetian-ruled Crete was under siege by the Ottoman Empire; it remains the second longest siege in history. The emphasis on this plan is the city's fortifications, which are explained by a key at bottom right. Atop the key is the Lion of Saint Mark, the symbol of the Republic of Venice. Ships appear in the gulf. Two insets in the top corners show Sanct Demiteri and Opera Mocenigo. Engraved by Johann Lathouwer.
