This small but detailed plan of Peking (Beijing) was issued in the December 15, 1860 issue of L'Illustration, Journal Universel, a weekly magazine issued in Paris from 1843-1944. It presents intricate detail of the buildings and paths of the inner city and locates the Imperial City, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, and more. The map was likely published as a result of the Convention of Peking (October 18, 1860), in which the Chinese surrendered to British and French forces, thus ending the Second Opium War.
