This lot features two prints of locations in Canton (Guangzhou). The first shows a factory building designed in a European style with a local market happening in the foreground. The second print shows a lavish Chinese garden complete with temple, decorative bridge and sampan in the water. They were drawn by Barthelemy Lauvergne, one of several painters who accompanied August Nicolas Vaillant on his circumnavigation of the globe. Issued in Vaillant's Voyage Autour du Monde Execute Pendant les Annes 1836 et 1837 sur la Corvette la Bonite Commandee … Album Historique. Printed by Rose-Joseph Lemercier, edited by Anthus Bertrand, and published by Ackermann & Co. in London.
