This untitled map was issued in a congressional war document during the Philippine–American War (1899-1902), a conflict that arose after American victory in the Spanish-American war gave control of the Philippines to the United States. It shows the numerous routes of General Henry Lawton, commander of the 1st Division of the Eighth Army Corps. Lawton enjoyed both popularity and success during these campaigns, scoring key victories at Santa Cruz and at Zapote Bridge (Manila) before he was killed in battle. Lawton was the only general killed during either the Spanish-American or Philippine–American War, and was scheduled for promotion the day he died.
