This colorful map extends from southern Europe to northeastern Africa and was issued on the cusp of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (October 1935). In Africa it reveals that all but two countries, Egypt and Ethiopia, were under European control including the nations of France, Great Britain, Belgium and Italy. At top is a large illustration of Benito Mussolini speaking to Italian forces with both Dutch and French text quoting Mussolini as saying "The fascist forces will make the five continents tremble. You will conquer and possess Abyssinia." Below the map is an image of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I with dual text stating "I want peace and submit to the verdict of the League of Nations." This conflict lasted 16 months with the Italians claiming victory and occupation. The war was viewed as typical of the expansionist policy of the Axis powers and also reflected the inefficacy of the League of Nations (which later became the United Nations following World War II). Drawn by W. Seghers and published by Patria in Antwerp.
