This volume contains 21 (of 26) issues of the Niles' Weekly Register, covering the period from March 1 - July 19, 1828. Of particular interest is the final issue (#21), which includes a long article on Texas (p. 334) and the proposed sale by Ben Milam to the British of his vast empresario holdings in Texas granted by the Mexican government. The growth and success of Austin’s colony is also noted along with discussion of the favorable conditions in Texas for settlement. Milam was part of the Long Expedition seeking Texas’ independence. Later he was a key figure in the first major campaign of the Texas Revolution, the Siege of Bexar in 1835, where he was killed. The volume also includes a number of early articles on railroads and a notice (p. 331) that Jefferson’s Monticello will be sold to pay the large debt in his estate (Jefferson died $107,000 in debt, the equivalent of $3.5 million today). Hardbound in quarter leather with tips over marbled boards.
