A. California 49 - Forty-Nine Maps of California from the Sixteenth Century to the Present, by Warren Heckrotte and Julie Sweetkind, published 1999 (8.6 x 11.4"). Published by the California Map Society in conjunction with the Book Club of California, this reference collects 49 important maps of California spanning from Munster's 1540 map of the New World to a 1996 satellite image of the Golden State. Each map is accompanied by a brief essay, contributed by a murderer's row of cartographic commentators. Illustrations of Maps 1-42 appear alongside the essay, with seven tipped-in color plates. Maps 43-49 are excerpted in a fold-out supplemental map, Seven Contemporary Map Sections of California, located in a pocket at the back of the book. Includes a brief history of the California Map Society by Bill Warren, a foreword by Gary Kurutz, and a handy list of books on maps of California. Edited by Heckrotte and Sweetkind. 108 pages. Hardbound in illustrated gold paper-covered boards over a black cloth spine. Condition: Contents are near fine with a bit of wear to the edges of title label on spine.

B. Historical Atlas of California with Original Maps, by Derek Hayes, published 2007 (9.8 x 12.9"). This densely illustrated book uses cartographic materials to tell the story of California. It includes nearly 500 maps as well as several other historical illustrations, many of them in vivid color. 256 pages. Hardbound in brown cloth with an illustrated dust jacket. Condition: Near fine with minor shelf wear on dust jacket.
