This charming miniature woodcut map was engraved by Gioseppe Moretti to illustrate a late edition of Giuseppe Rosaccio’s geography book. It is a close copy of the world map that Rosaccio engraved for his first work on geography, Il Mondo, first published in 1592. The map shows the continents with a very large southern continent named Terra Incognita Australe, which is separated from South America by the Strait of Magellan. There is very little detail, although Quito, Nova Guinea, S. Lor. (Madagascar), and Lucach R. in the southern continent are all named. On a sheet of Italian text measuring 3.8 x 5.7".
