This decorative and detailed wall map was engraved by J.B. Taylor & H.F. Wheeler and published by Chapin & Taylor. It presents the eastern United States to as far as about the 96th Parallel, including a small portion of Missouri Territory and the Republic of Texas. Wisconsin Territory includes a large Carver's Tract, and Iowa Territory shows only limited development along its eastern side. Counties are delineated in hand coloring, and there is excellent detail of towns and settlements, rivers, and wagon roads, which also include mileages between locations. There are a total of 9 inset maps surrounding the main map including one depicting the Republic of Texas in its large configuration and a map of the western Untied States presenting Oregon Territory extending well into present-day British Columbia. The map is surrounded by a decorative border featuring portraits of the first 8 presidents, views of eastern cities in the corners, and a title cartouche featuring the goddess of geography surrounded by representations of the continents. Title cartouche was drawn by Chapin and engraved by Prudhomme. Sold by T. & E.H. Ensign. Original rollers are present and intact.

This map was first published in 1839 with subsequent editions running into the 1860s.

Full contemporary color with original rollers present and intact. There is some light cracking in the image and minor loss along the edges of the sheet, far from the map image. An overall attractive piece in favorable condition.
