A. A King of Florida Consulting His Magician Previous to His Going to Battle, by William Henry Portlock, from A New, Complete, and Universal Collection of Authentic and Entertaining Voyages & Travels, circa 1791 (9.8 x 6.5"). This engraving depicts Chief Utina (Outina) kneeling before a contorted sorcerer in a pre-battle consultation. Indigenous soldiers stand in the background, many armed with breastplates, bows and arrows, and war clubs. This engraving appeared in William Henry Portlock's history of voyages, which was published by Alexander Hogg. It is derived from the iconic engraving from Part II of De Bry's Grands Voyages. Reference: Shirley (BL Atlases) G.PORT-1a. Condition: A nice impression with faint dampstaining and marginal toning.
B. Vestitura, e Villaggio dei Floridiani, by Veremondo Rossi, from Il Gazzettiere Americano..., circa 1763 (6.8 x 8.6"). This engraving depicts Indigenous Floridians in an idyllic village scene. In the foreground is a young warrior and a woman, both in tunics, and a child. Behind them are several village buildings. Title appears in a banner-style cartouche, and the engraving is surrounded by a keyboard style border. Condition: A crisp impression with faint dampstaining that is only visible in the blank margins.
