This large chart illustrates Guanabara Bay with a plan view of Rio de Janeiro on its western shore. There is excellent navigational detail in the bay including numerous soundings, shoals, ground types, anchorages, lighthouses, and more. Many islands are depicted in the bay with well developed coastlines including Paqueta Island, Governador Island, Villegagnon Island, and Ilha das Cobras. Mountains are depicted along the coastline, including Corcovado Mountain (site of the Christ the Redeemer statue). Below the chart is a coastal approach view of the entrance and the engraved seal of the Depot de la Marine, along with the price of "Prix. Deux Francs." A seller's stamp is adjacent to the title. Originally created in 1829, this edition is updated with corrections to 1869.
