A. The Proposed International Super Highway, circa 1930, black & white (11.2 x 17.9"). This anonymous outline map shows the proposed highway from the Straits of Magellan to Point Barrow, Alaska with an emphasis on the cities in California and the Pacific Northwest. Text flanking the map states “When Completed will be the Longest and Grandest Possible Travelway in the World.” Verso is a broadside “To the Delegates Meeting for Promotion of U.S. Highway 99, Yreka Calif.” The text signed by J.C. Forkner, a prominent land developer, promotes the proposed highway, including U.S. 99 as part of it. Unrecorded in OCLC. Condition: There is light offsetting and a short fold separation along the top sheet edge that has been closed on verso with archival tape. (B+)
B. Pictorial Map of the American Continent Featuring the Pan American Highway and Showing Some of the Natural Resources, Scenic Wonders, and Points of Interest, by General Drafting Co., circa 1945, printed color (17.3 x 23.7"). This pictorial map by the Standard Oil Co. promotes the nascent Pan-American Highway to encourage travel by automobile. The extensive highway is depicted in red overprinting with dotted sections indicating "projected or impassable" roads. Descriptive text at bottom notes that "in a few years the dream of a generation of Americans - North, South and Central - will be realized." In addition to the highway, the map is densely and attractively illustrated with small vignettes representative of the various regions. Verso includes the flags and brief descriptions of each country. Self-folding into pictorial wrappers (4.2 x 9.0"). Condition: Clean and colorful with a few tiny splits at the fold junctions. (A)
