This attractive map of the Indochine coast by Daniel Tavernier extends from southeastern China through Vietnam to the Mekong Delta. It is filled with notations along the coastlines including the spot where Saint Francis Xavier died (Shangchuan), hot springs (Hainan), and "islands of turtles" (Con Son Islands) due to the abundance of turtles. The map depicts a somewhat exaggerated view of the coastline with numerous rivers emptying into the sea, rugged mountains, and offshore islands. Ornately decorated by sailing ships, Neptune riding his chariot across the South China Sea, a compass rose, and strapwork title cartouche held up by a cherub. Tavernier was a French merchant whose travels in the region pioneered trade with India and the Orient.
