This graphic scene illustrates a British fleet, under the direction of Rear Admiral Watson, seizing the fortified town of Geriah along the Malabar Coast. The town had been under the control of Mahrattan pirate Tulagee Angria, whose forces regularly attacked British East India Company ships in this region known as the "Pirate Coast." After a day and a half of battle, Angria surrendered. Watson destroyed the pirate's fleet (his ships are shown burning at left), but spared Angria and his family. Large stashes of spices and other valuables were also recovered. Engraved by Pierre Canot and published by Thomas Jefferys.
