This sheet features six vignettes of life in New Zealand during the Land Wars, from a "Correspondent in high official position." Relations between settlers in New Zealand and Maori people degenerated into warfare several times between 1845-72. At top left is a humble colonial church in Waimate, with an officer's shelter shown opposite. In the center of the sheet is a Maori war dance "for the amusement of the British, who are enjoying the grotesque exhibition," as the text puts it so condescendingly. Small vignettes depict an Indigenous fighting strategy utilizing underground caverns. Lastly, at bottom is a group of Maoris in traditional dress. Published in the January 16th, 1847 issue of The Illustrated London News.
