This lot contains two volumes of the Niles’ Weekly Register with extensive coverage of activities relating to Texas:

The complete 26-issue first volume includes articles on various U.S. proposals to acquire Texas from the Mexican government, which was in need of funds to defend against a Spanish invasion. Other articles include an early mention of Davy Crockett as a Congressman, a report that the Rothschilds had purchased Jerusalem, a report that Key West Harbor is “the best harbor in the United States…south of the Chesapeake,” and considerable reporting on Indian affairs. 440 pages. Lacking covers.

The complete second volume is unusually large and contains 26 weekly issues, 2 supplements, and a year-end supplement. The articles on Texas and Mexico describe visits by U.S. envoys Poinsett and Butler to Mexico where an offer of five million dollars for Texas angered the Mexican government (p. 4), the Mexican government allowing the current 1,000 slave holdings in Texas but prohibiting the introduction of additional slaves (p. 291), and an order from Stephen Austin to permit tax collection (p. 370). A fascinating article describes an underwater dive to a depth of 180 feet for 45 minutes in a walnut diving capsule (p. 470). The diver survived. 670 total pages. Lacking covers.
