This is Joseph Nimmo’s first report on commerce within the United States. Nimmo was Chief of the Bureau of Statistics in the Treasury Department and responsible for a number of important reports regarding railroads and the cattle industry. A large section of the report deals with “The Relations of the Railroads to the Public Interest,” topics he describes as ‘the railroad problem.’ Nimmo states “the main object…has been to describe the evils which have sprung up in the course of the development of the railroad system, and the measures which have been proposed or adopted for the correction of such evils.” Nimmo concluded by recommending more governmental regulation. A large appendix contains reports of experts. Accompanying the report are 8 folding maps including The Principal Transportation Lines West of Chicago, St. Louis & New Orleans (23.2 x 20.3”) and The Principal Transportation Lines Extending West from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore (22.7 x 16.0”) in color, along with 6 smaller black & white maps showing other U.S. regions. 250 pages. Hardbound in quarter leather with tips over marbled boards.
