This is the unrecorded first edition of this comprehensive automobile route book published by the Touring Information Bureau of America (TIB). It is remarkable for both its breadth of scope and level of detail - few were considering coast to coast auto travel at this time. The 288 pages of text includes 66 strip maps, illustrations, advertisements, and a folding map attached to the rear cover showing the "Route of the TIB Transcontinental Pathfinder" over the National Old Trails Road and other connecting highways. This route was completed for TIB by a 1908 Apperson Jack Rabbit "from coast to coast and return to Kansas City without a mishap." The information provided in the guide was therefore based upon first-hand driver experience and features extensive information on routes, points of interest, lodging, garages, and much more. Pictorial wrappers (5.0 x 10.1"). We found one past sales record and no institutional examples for this 1914 edition in OCLC.
For a similar pioneering effort relating to aviation maps by TIB, see the next lot (117).
