This is the second edition of this spectacular wall map and the first to include Mitchell's name in the title. It illustrates an era of rapidly expanding westward settlement, and covers the United States westward to include all of Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana along with a small portion of Missouri Territory and Mexico (which also names Texas). Wisconsin is shown as “Attached to Michigan,” with Carver's Tract outlined in red and the southwest corner identified as Iowa. It is highly detailed showing counties, townships, parishes, towns and settlements, trails and wagon routes, canals, and railroads. The main map image is surrounded by 13 supporting inset maps including the large General Map of the United States with the contiguous British & Mexican Possessions, which shows good detail in Texas including Austin’s Colony, San Felipe de Austin, San Antonio and more. It also presents the huge Oregon Territory extending far to the north into present-day British Columbia, illustrating the growing tensions between the United States and Britain in the Oregon boundary dispute. The other 12 insets include Albany, Baltimore/Washington, Charleston, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Niagara Falls, Rochester, Northern Maine, Southern Florida, Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. Beneath the title is a large engraved composite view designed by W. Mason that includes the capitol building in Washington, D.C. and a large American eagle perched on a seashell boat. This theme is echoed in the surrounding decorative border with seashells in each corner and at the bottom. The map was compiled and engraved by James H. Young with the assistance of F. Dankworth, E. Yeager and E.F. Woodward. A remarkable production that is complete with original rollers.
