This beautifully engraved pocket map was issued as a guide for travelers and immigrants. It is densely filled with information on stage roads, railroads, political divisions, towns and villages, watersheds and canals. The areas of Minnesota and Dakotah are sparsely settled. A table at top right shows statistics from the 1850 census including population, principal cities, crops, and livestock. The map is embellished with a decorative floral border and the engraved vignette "Maidens Rock, Lake Pepin on the Mississippi." Published in Colton's Western Tourist and Emigrant's Guide including 149 pages of informative text and 36 pages of advertisements for the Colton firm. On the front endpaper is an ink inscription: "John R. Cleek's Book - A Present from his Grandfather John Cleek Sr. Jan 14th 1887." Hardbound in brown cloth (4.0 x 6.0") with gilt title and illustrations on the front cover.

Condition: B+

Issued folding with full contemporary color. There is minor foxing, a few short fold separations, and minor staining along the left border where the map is adhered to the rear cover. Accompanying text has scattered foxing. Covers are lightly worn with bumped corners.
