This map of the Los Angeles City Oil Field was drawn by Charles Blackmar and published by the State Mining Bureau. It covers a roughly 4-mile long by 0.25-mile wide section from just south of Dodger Stadium west to Vermont Avenue. Hundreds of oil wells are located and numbered within each block and a legend at top left further identifies tanks, pumping plants and traps. Oil was discovered here in 1890 and by 1895 this small area accounted for over half of the state's oil production. The success of this field led to other oil discoveries in the Los Angeles Basin including the Beverly Hills Oil Field in 1900.
