This beautifully engraved and detailed battle plan was published in Pufendorf's chronicle on the Northern Wars and military campaigns of Sweden's King Charles X. It depicts the Siege of Riga (1656) under Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich's troops, one of the key engagements in the Russo-Swedish War of 1656–1658. The plan depicts the battle on multiple fronts, including armies clashing on the outskirts of the fortified city and naval forces firing from the Duna River. A large number of cavalry soldiers are shown in the foreground. Evidence of the battles is conveyed through smoke, explosions, and the ballistic paths of mortar and cannon shot to and from the ships and the walled city. Two very detailed and large decorative cartouches portray a military theme and simulated picture frame borders surround. Two sheets joined, as issued.
