This attractive view of the fortified city of Gravelines in northern France was issued in Blaeu's Townbook of the Netherlands. The city, which was under Spanish control at the time, is situated along the Aa river about 15 miles southwest of Dunkirk. Small figures are seen walking on the wide beaches and a ship squadron is depicted patrolling the English Channel. A profile view at top shows a steady stream of locals heading toward the fortified city with plumes of smoke rising in the distance. The plan is richly embellished with an elaborate cartouche and two coats of arms. Latin text on verso.
Blaeu published the Townbook towards the end of the conflict with Spain and consequently the atlas became linked with the Dutch struggle for independence.
