This well-preserved leaflet is coded "118-J-1" and was produced by the Psychological Warfare Branch of the U.S. Army. It was dropped by U.S. forces on the Japanese mainland to persuade the Japanese to surrender. The illustration on the front of the leaflet shows a clock made up of islands taken by the United States with the minute hand closing in on Japan at 12 o'clock.
The back of the leaflet contains Japanese text and is accompanied by an additional page with the official English translation. A portion of this text is shown below (see images for complete text):
"The US forces sympathize with the people, but must carry on the war until the militarists are completely crushed. Your leaders can bring back the days of peace or they can plunge Japan into destruction unequalled in history."
"Will you stand idly by and allow Japan to be destroyed because the militarists are ashamed to admit defeat? Now is the time when you should save your country from destruction and work for a reborn Japan."
