This sheet from Coronelli's Isolario features a view of the Croatian city of Ragusi (Dubrovnik), with nice detail of its architecture and fortifications. The city was almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake in 1667, less than 30 years before this view was published. On verso is another view, this one depicting a settlement of the Pastrovici peoples, a historical tribe who were located along the Bay of Kotor and part of the Venetian Republic. The Italian text surrounding the view describes their lands as stretching between Budua and Antivari (Bar) in Montenegro. At the time of publication, the Ottoman Empire held control of Antivari. Both views include a banner-style title cartouche. Coronelli established the society of geographers "Accademia degli Argonauta," one of the oldest in the world, and became the official geographer of the Venetian Republic. His maps of the Adriatic Sea were of particular strategic and economic importance and were also often used to glorify Venice and its victories over the Turks. On a sheet of Italian text measuring 14.0 x 19.7".
