This lot includes three gorgeous charts designed by Choiseul-Gouffier and engraved by J. Perrier. The first depicts the island of Delos, one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece. It was the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis and its archaeological ruins are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean. The map provides an excellent view of temples and ruins. The second shows Paros, known throughout history for its marble quarries. The chart features soundings and names several locations of interest, including Parikia, Naousa, and Mt. Capresso. Portions of the nearby islands of Naxos and Antiparos are visible. The third chart zooms in on Naousa, with remarkable detail of its various batteries and fortifications. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-74, Naousa was a Russian naval base; the title cartouche reflects the military focus of the map with cannon, cannonballs, guns, and a sheathed saber. Each chart is rendered with fine topographical detail and is embellished with a compass rose and a decorative title cartouche.
