This well-preserved leaflet is coded "19-J-1" and was produced by the Psychological Warfare Branch of the U.S. Army. It was dropped by U.S. forces on Japanese troops in the Philippines. The illustration on the front of the leaflet shows General Yamashita withdrawing from a wreckage-strewn battlefield in defeat.
The back of the leaflet contains Japanese text and is accompanied by an additional page with the official English translation. A portion of this text is shown below (see images for complete text):
"When the Americans landed in the Philippines, you soldiers fought bravely. In spite of this, in less than two months, the fighting turned definitely against you and the battlefield is now moving steadily to the North. To check our determined advance the Tokyo militarist entrusted the task to the famous Japanese general, Yamashita. He has failed, sacrificing futilely tens of thousands of your comrades."
"Soldiers, must you, like your comrades in the Solomons and New Guinea, die a lonely dog's death in a distant land just because of such incompetence and irresponsibility?"
