This leaf is from the brief transitional period when the new technology of printing with movable type was combined with the more labor intensive methods of hand painting. The earliest printers were trained in the manuscript tradition and incorporated the conventions of historiated initials and illustrations into their early work. At first they left those spaces blank for the illuminator to complete entirely by hand. Later they developed printing methods (using woodcuts or iron engravings) to decorate the leaves.
This superb hand-colored image shows the presentation of Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem. The text below the image is from Psalm 69 and translates as: "O God, reach out to help me. O Lord, hasten to assist me." The verso of this vellum leaf includes elaborate iron engravings that feature scenes from the bible. The text is from Psalm 125, and translates in part as:
When the Lord turned back the captivity of Zion, we became like those who are consoled.
Then our mouth was filled with gladness and our tongue with exultation.
Then they will say among the nations: “The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us. We have become joyful.
