This handsome facsimile of the second edition of Coronelli's Libro dei Globi (originally published in Venice in 1701) is part of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Series of Atlases in Facsimile Fourth Series - Volume V. Coronelli (1650 - 1718) was a Franciscan friar who established the society of geographers "Accademia degli Argonauta," one of the oldest in the world, and became the official geographer of the Venetian Republic. He was a globe-maker of great renown, and the Libro dei Globi was a comprehensive showcase of his talents in that art form. As Dr. Helen Wallis summarizes in her informative bibliographical note, "Between the boards of a book he brought together a record of all the globes he had made, from the smallest, two inches in diameter, to the largest, the great globes fifteen feet in diameter, which he had constructed for King Louis XIV of France." The volume includes black & white reproductions of 133 illustrations of globes and globe gores, 9 of them double-page, and 4 plates, including a portrait of Coronelli. 296 pages. Elephant folio, quarter faux leather over brown cloth boards with gilt title on spine.
