This is a later issue of a map first published in 1834, which Wheat describes as "one of the foundation stones of western mapping history." This edition has been "revised and augmented" by Alexander Vuillemin and reflects the greatly increased physical knowledge of the West. It shows very large Nebraska, Oregon, Utah and New Mexico territories with Texas in its present-day configuration. Kansas Territory extends to the Continental Divide, including present-day eastern Colorado. The map is still somewhat outdated, however, with speculative lakes and an east-west mountain range in the Great Basin, and the Gila River still depicted as the boundary between the United States and Mexico. The Route des emigrants en Californie is traced from Jefferson, MO to the gold fields in California with an interesting deviation through Nevada. The map has considerable information on the Indian nations and early settlements in the western part of the United States. There are two large insets of Mexico, with one centered on Mexico City and the other depicting the Yucatan and Guatemala. Dissected in 21 sections, mounted on linen and folded, with publisher's label on verso, as issued.
