This is the January 1940 issue of Columns, the humor magazine for University of Washington students. It features a centerfold map of Europe Today? by Marlowe Hartung that presents a light-hearted view of the war in Europe from an American perspective before it became a World War. Images include Neville Chamberlain holding a copy of Mein Kampf, Mussolini sitting on a fence, Yogi Yadolph [Hitler] looking at a crystal ball as a Bum Steer sits beside him, Stalin carrying a poster “Finland Unfair to Soviet Union,” League of Nations in Geneva “Closed for Repairs,” press in the grandstand watching cheerful soldiers in their bunkers near Belgium, and neutral American boats hovering off Britain’s shores. Interestingly, the illustrator went on to receive a Bronze Star as an American soldier in the World War. A complete issue with its original used mailing envelope.
