This scarce jigsaw puzzle of the United States contains over 50 pieces (missing only Massachusetts, which is replaced in facsimile) made of 3/16" compressed paper boards. It was created from a Colton map with basic detail of cities, state capitals, forts, rivers and mountains with two profile views at bottom. While the map copyright date is 1860, the cartography suggests a circa date around 1868 with the appearance of Wyoming Territory (and no mention of Yellowstone). The puzzle is housed in cardboard box with "The Silent Teacher!" paper title label, published by the Union Sectional Map Company in both New Haven and Oswego, NY. Williams notes that the "Silent Teacher" series began in 1877, so Union here was using a somewhat outdated map. The puzzle verso contains an attractive color print of an 18th century French grape harvest. Box label further promotes that the puzzle will "impress upon the mind in living and lasting form, the division, position and relation which each State hold to its neighbor."
