This lovely hand-colored lithograph shows an adult male specimen of the skua gull, native to the Orkney, Shetland, and Faroes islands in the North Atlantic. "Drawn from Life & on Stone by J. & E. Gould." John Gould (1804-81) created some of the most beautiful bird prints ever produced and was known throughout the world as "The Bird Man." This lithograph was published in the last volume of his 5-volume The Birds of Europe (1832-37). Printed by C. Hullmandel.

Condition: A

Full contemporary color with light dampstaining along the sheet's bottom edge, and a few short tears and tiny chips along the edges, all well away from lithographed image. There is a small sticker from a previous owner on verso.
