This well-preserved leaflet coded "26-J-1" was produced by the Psychological Warfare Branch of the U.S. Army. It was dropped by U.S. forces on mainland Japan and intended for both a military and civilian audience. The illustration on the front of the leaflet shows an Empress tree with a large leaf marked "Berlin" falling to the ground. The labeled leaf on the ground is "Rome," while the remaining leaf on the tree is "Tokyo." The choice of the Empress tree was purposeful, as leaves falling from this tree symbolize loneliness and the past in traditional Japanese culture.
The back of the leaflet contains Japanese text and is accompanied by an additional page with the official English translation. A portion of this text is shown below (see images for complete text):
"The great German army which once overran the entire continent of Europe, has been pushed back by Allied forces until the capital city, Berlin, has now fallen. The European war is in its last days."
"What is going to happen to Japan now left behind in isolation?"
