Exquisite portrait of two of the most important mapmakers during the Dutch dominance of cartography. Gerard Mercator is shown with his successor, Jodocus Hondius, seated at a table surrounded by the implements of their trade. The fine portrait is set within an elaborate strapwork framework, which encompasses a map of Europe. The scene was engraved by Coletta Hondius and appears in the Atlas from 1613 onwards. Beautiful original coloring. Professional repair along centerfold with a bit of the bottom margin filled in. Also a strip of paper laid into right margin 1" from neatline. A bit of scattered foxing affecting mostly the margins and not distracting from this very desirable sheet. $1400 RESERVE
