Richly engraved double hemisphere map based on the 1655 map of Arnold Colom. CALIFORNIA IS AN ISLAND, separated from 'Nova Albion' which stretches towards Asia and off the map. The western coast of New Zealand appears, as do several other important Pacific islands. Australia is partially mapped and attached to New Guinea, and only the southern tip of Tasmania appears. Each hemisphere includes a strapwork cartouche. Superb engravings surround the map with six statuesque female allegorical representations of the Goddesses of Day and Night and the elements of Fire, Air, Water and Earth. Very fine impression and color. Ref: Shirley #395.
