Another from this series of maps by the Jesuit mathematician. The map is presented on a polar projection and is shaded to indicate the spread of the Catholic religion throughout the world. CALIFORNIA IS AN ISLAND. Title enclosed in a strapwork cartouche with a symbolic scene on the right showing the separation of the sheep from the goats, with the sheep ascending to heaven and the goats descending to hell. To the left is Magellan's ship. Numerous sea monsters occupy the oceans. Ref. Shirley 628.
