First state of the third plate of this important world map. It is a simplified version of Mercator's influential world map of 1569 updated with the more correct shape of South America and the first depiction of the Soloman Islands off the coast of New Guinea. The oval projection is surrounded by an intricate strapwork design and four corner medallions containing quotations from Cicero and Seneca. German text on verso, indicating this map was published in the 1602 edition. Ref: Shirley #158, and van den Broecke #3. Soiling in margins, a tiny bit of smudged color, and extra light creasing along fold, overall very good. $5,500 RESERVE
