Exquisite portrait of two of the most important mapmakers during the Dutch dominance of cartography. Gerard Mercator is shown with his successor, Jodocus Hondius, seated at a table surrounded by the implements of their trade. The fine portrait is set within an elaborate strapwork framework, which encompasses a map of Europe. The scene was engraved by Coletta Hondius and appears in the Atlas from 1613 onwards. Creased in bottom corners with Japanese tissue reinforcement, and some old repairs of centerfold. Slight mat burn in margins, still a nice example of this very desirable sheet. $1400 RESERVE
