A large vellum sheet illuminated initials in red, blue and gold ink on both sides. The book of hours served as a devotional work containing various prayers and meditations appropriate to seasons, months, days of the week, and hours of the day. The Latin text (from St. Luke, chapter 2, verse 26) is surrounded by engraved scenes, both of biblical stories and mundane matters, on both sides. One side is enclosed in a stunning manuscript illumination of Jesus holding a challis. The other side is enclosed in an uncolored engraved panel of scenes and includes a large illuminated miniature of Saint Luke writing at a desk. Some staining at top, else fine.
