The great map was drawn by J.H. Young and published in 1854. The full original hand color graphically illustrates the large western territories of Washington, Oregon, Utah, New Mexico, Missouri, Minnesota, and Indian Territory. The routes for the "Great Pacific Railroad" are noted including those crossing Mexican territory. It was these rail lines that spurred the desire to purchase the land south of the Gila River in the Gadsden Purchase. The border here is shown pre-Gadsden, as the purchase was not complete until later in the year. Insets of Gold Region of California and District of Columbia.
