This map became the prototype for north polar projections for many later maps. It depicts rhumb lines radiating from the North Pole. A large title cartouche, with two figures and numerous wind heads, conveniently hides the northwest coast of America. The map is further decorated with several compass roses, ships and an additional cartouche, which depicts parka-clad men, a polar bear and foxes. Original outline color on map and fully colored decorations. This is state #4 of the plate with no text on verso and issued by Visscher.
