As the influential editor of the Springfield Massachusetts Republican with an abiding interest in western expansion, Bowles joined Schuyler Colfax, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, on a tour of the western railroads and the transcontinental rail line, which was then under construction. Traveling through Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington, Bowles wrote one of the most complete accounts of the region immediately after the Civil War. Includes hand colored folding map, engraved by J.H. Goldthwait, "Map of the Territories and the Pacific States" with an inset "Plan of Central California".
