Hand colored, copper engraving of the famous cartographer from a Dutch dictionary, engraved by Rein Vinkeles. Barleus (1584-1648) was a historian, philosopher and theologian of Amsterdam. He was instrumental in the publishing of Antonio de Herrera's "Descriptcion de la Indias Occidentales" and Georg Marcgraf's important large scale map of Brazil. The oval portrait is surrounded in a handsomely engraved frame with title below.
