Fine vellum leaf from a Book of Hours written in Northern France. The text is written in both Latin and French as was common at this time. It mentions the Archangel Michael, John the Baptist, Peter, Paul and the apostles. Both sides of the leaf are decorated with lovely 2-line initials in blue, red and gold. The techniques used for illumination required a great of amount of skill in the preparation and application of the gold leaf with egg white, gum arabic, and stag-horn glue which was then burnished to a high gloss with a wolf's tooth.
