Robert Havell, Jr. was an important English engraver and is best known for engraving the plates for James Audubon's elephant folio edition of "Birds of America". After coming to America, Havell painted and engraved several important American views including a companion to this view as seen from the North River. This view from the East River shows a much busier shipping scene and is a rich and detailed panorama with 50 various sailing ships, schooners etc., many of them flying the American flag. It was produced in a combination of aquatint and etching and delicately hand colored. Ref: I.N. Phelps Stokes, "The Iconography of Manhattan Island", Plate #123b. It has suffered some visible damage including several long tears that have been repaired and backed on an archival mounting board. Margins trimmed with some chipping in margins, stabilized by the mounting board. Still a decorative example and a very scarce print, that is rarely seen on the market.
