A very fine vellum leaf from an early printed Book of Hours. During the Middle Ages these layman's prayer books were written and decorated completely by hand on vellum. During the brief incunabula period the transition from manuscript to printing included these fine works with illustrations from metal plates surrounding the printed text. The large capital letters were still painted by hand with red, blue and gold. The text is from Psalm 148 with scenes from the Apocalypse and Revelations. The French coat of arms is included in a scene at the bottom of the recto side.
