This memorable auction took place in May and October, 1999. "Dr. Siebert's library of the North American Indian was probably the last great collection of Americana to chronicle and follow the frontier across the continent. It was formed over a period of more than 50 years by probably the most knowledgeable Americanists of his time. Dr. Siebert's collection covers Canada, the Northeast, the South, Trans-Appalachia, the Mississippi Valley, the Plains and Rockies, the West and Southwest, especially Texas, and includes Indian captivities, Indian treaties, Indian deeds, Indian language books, western overland narratives, Jesuit Relations, etc., including many border books and printings on frontier and mission hand presses. Dr. Siebert's collection interconnects continuously - books with maps, with manuscripts, with portraits. It tells the story of the North American Indian and the American frontier, and by focusing on the Indian, the dominant figure in the American landscape, by pulling on that one thread, it unravels the tapestry of American history". [The above from the catalog foreword, by Bailey Bishop]. Two-volume set, 760 pages total. Hardbound in red cloth with gilt titles and illustration. Unused, including auction results.
